Being a good and faithful steward involves a humble admission that all we have and all we are comes from a single source, God. Healthy stewardship also elicits a deep sense of gratitude in our hearts for all the blessings we have received. Gratitude, in turn, propels us onward to ever greater generosity. Paul had it right, when he quoted Jesus in The Acts of the Apostles, “the words of the Lord Jesus, for he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” [20:35]
It’s an exciting time in ministry at St. Thomas à Becket. We’ve grown, both spiritually and numerically, as a Body. Our worship brings joy. Our classes offer wisdom. Our outreach to the community offers hope. We greet newcomers with gracious hospitality. Fellowship events bring us ever closer as a faith family, and our ministry of pastoral care provides comfort, support, and peace to people in need. I could fill pages with the wonderful work happening here. It’s exciting!
All of it has been motivated by love, and by God’s grace, inspiring us to respond in faith by practicing the spiritual discipline of stewardship. We have so much to be thankful for, including each other, because moving upward is not something any of us do alone. We do it together as a parish family.
It takes faith, a basic trust in God, to give generously. Our faith is nurtured and strengthened when we pause for prayer to reflect on how graciously God has blessed us. When we recognize and honor how God has provided for us, we feel a deep sense of gratitude that inspires us to respond in a way that advances God’s purposes for our community. As St. Paul wrote, “Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” [II Corinthians 9:7]
We place our hope in God, who provides all things with abundance by working through the power of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of each of us. I encourage you to prayerfully reflect on how God is leading you to help.

WORSHIP inspires us. It’s a special opportunity to glorify God and give Him thanks for the many blessings we’ve received. It also transforms us and gives us wisdom, insights that help us live and love more faithfully. We receive strength to meet daily challenges with grace and peace. Worship brings us closer to Christ and to each other, where we find meaning, a deep sense of belonging, and transcendent joy. Every year, we offer approximately 120 services. Each one requires time, energy, and imagination from our staff: writing sermons, preparing music and bulletins, so that we can experience God in a powerful way. For many visitors, how they experience our worship will be a decisive factor in choosing whether to make St. Thomas à Becket their faith family.

CHRISTIAN FORMATION enhances understanding of our faith and how best to practice it. Regular Bible study, Children’s Chapel, youth programs, Saturday seminars, Confirmation classes, even our Nursery experience, engage people with God’s love as revealed in scripture and invites reflection on how we can live in grace and truth. Being formed in faith encourages ministry.

OUTREACH involves finding Jesus in every person, especially those Jesus describes as “one of the least of these,” those in greatest need. [Matthew 25:31-46] When we serve the hungry, the homeless, and those close to collapse, we serve Jesus. We already do this through countless means, and we incorporate funds in our operating budget to boast this purpose. We’re looking for new opportunities to do more in 2025 that will advance this core aspect of our mission as witnesses of Jesus’ love. We also include our Diocesan Apportionment here, because much of our funding goes to support the deep needs of congregations and programs throughout West Virginia, several of which would close without the help of bigger parishes like ours.

PASTORAL CARE involves tending to the sick, lonely, grieving, afraid, confused, and exhausted. It includes counseling, as well as visits at hospitals, homes, and rehabilitation facilities. Being present with people with open ears offers healing and hope. As our parish keeps growing, the need for spiritual nourishment in difficult situations will expand, too.

CHURCH ADMINISTRATION involves the day-to-day operation of the Church. An important part of this is communicating in various ways with the parish to inform people of the ways they can be involved in St. Thomas à Becket’s ministries. Administration also involves the careful management of the gifts and pledges entrusted by parishioners for the operation of the Church.

CHURCH FACILITIES relates to the costs of heating, cooling and lighting. It also involves the maintenance of our grounds and buildings. This category also includes things like insurance— fire, liability, etc.—that help keep us safe in case the worst happens. We spend thousands on insurance every year.
